GAUGE:

9 sc + 8 rnds = 4 in. (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Backpack Reviewed by Elizabeth Sue on 2010-07-28 *****
This pattern was very easy to follow even for a person who has problems with reading patterns. The only thing is (as previously stated) the bag was turning out a little too small for my tastes so I continued the increases for a few more rows. I did the increasing rows all in single stitch but after I switched to double stitch so the pattern would go faster(in a rush for a late birthday present for a friend on her way back from England). It turned out so wonderful. I'm thrilled to give it to her I hope she loves it! Would recommend this pattern to anyone who is just starting out
