GAUGE:

16 single crochet + 18 rows = 4 in. (10 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

NOTES:

Change color when joining a round. To join and change color, insert hook in first single crochet of round, yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook; drop, but do not cut old color. Carry color not in use loosely up inside of piece.

BODY (make 2)
With A, chain 22.
Row 1: Single crochet in 2nd chain from hook and each chain across - 21 single crochet.
Row 2: Chain 1, turn, single crochet in each single crochet across.
Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 8 in. (20.5 cm) from beginning. Fasten off.

ARMS AND LEGS (make 4)
With B, chain 3; join with slip stitch in first chain to form a ring.
Round 1: Work 5 single crochet in ring; join with slip stitch in first single crochet.
Round 2: Chain 1, 2 single crochet in each single crochet around; join with slip stitch in first single crochet - 10 single crochet.
Round 3: Chain 1, single crochet in each single crochet around; insert hook in first single crochet, yarn over with C and draw through all loops on hook; drop B.
Round 4: With C, chain 1, single crochet in each single crochet around; join with slip stitch in first single crochet.
Round 5: Chain 1, single crochet in each single crochet around; insert hook in first single crochet, yarn over with B and draw through all loops on hook; drop C.
Round 6: With B, chain 1, single crochet in each single crochet around; join with slip stitch in first single crochet.
Round 7: Chain 1, single crochet in each single crochet around; insert hook in first single crochet, yarn over with C and draw through all loops on hook; drop B.
Rounds 8-11: Repeat Rounds 4-7. Fasten off B.
Rounds 12 and 13: Repeat Rounds 4 and 5. Fasten off C.

EYE PATCH
With B, chain 6.
Row 1: Single crochet in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across.
Row 2: Turn, skip first stitch, single crochet in 4 stitches.
Row 3: Turn, skip first stitch, single crochet in 2 stitches. Fasten off.

FINISHING
With B, embroider straight stitch eye, mouth, and 'scar' on one Body piece. Sew on Eye Patch. With B, embroider chain stitch horizontally above patch.

With wrong sides of Body pieces held together and working through both thicknesses, join A and single crochet around all sides, working 2 single crochet in each corner. Before closing the final edge, stuff toy. Sew Arms and Legs in place. Weave in ends.

Pirate Pal Reviewed by Christine Hanstad on 2009-04-03 *****
I'm giving the Pirate Pal 5 stars because I LOVE how it turned out, but as a beginner I struggled with the instructions for the arms and legs... so I'll point out what I did in case anyone else has troubles. To start, I ch2 and then worked 5 stitches in the 1st chain. Once I got that far I followed the instructions listed BUT after joining with a slip stitch and ch 1, I TURNED the piece and continued. Hope this helps!
