GAUGE:

18 sts + 38 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

BACK
With A, cast on 63 (75, 81) sts. Knit 4 rows. Beg with a knit row, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until piece measures 8 (9, 10) in. (20.5 (23, 25.5) cm) from beg, end with a WS row.
Shape Yoke
Next Row: *K1, k2tog; repeat from * to end of row - 42 (50, 54) sts.
Continue in Garter st (k every row) until yoke measures 1 1/2 (1 3/4, 2) in. (4 (4.5, 5) cm).
Shape Armhole
Bind off 4 (6, 6) sts at beg of next two rows - 34 (38, 42) sts. Decrease 1 st at each end of every RS row 4 (5, 5) times - 26 (28, 32) sts. Work even until yoke measures 3 (3 1/2, 4) in. (7.5 (9, 10) cm).
Shape Neck
Next Row (RS):
K6 and slip to a holder, bind off 14 (16, 20) sts, knit to end.
Work in Garter st on 6 sts for 4 1/2 in. (11.5 cm) for tie. Bind off.
Slip 6 sts from holder to back to needle and join yarn.
Work in Garter st for 4 1/2 in. (11.5 cm) for second tie.
Bind off.

Child's Sun Top Reviewed by Pam Recko on 2008-10-24 *****
This pattern was so easy! I have never made clothing before, but the directions were perfect. I entered it in Pumpkin Show and got a Blue Ribbon, and I didn't embroider the flowers on as I didn't want to make a mistake. I am now working on another one in Maize. I plan to use buttons for the flowers. Great Pattern! Thank you!!
