Lion Brand® Wool-Ease® Thick & Quick®

GAUGE:

8 sts + 16 rows = 4 in. [10 cm] in garter st (k every row). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

BACK
Cast on 25 (31, 37, 43) sts. Work in garter st until piece measures 7 (12, 14, 16) in. [18 (30.5, 35.5, 40.5) cm] from beg, end with a WS row.

Dec Row (RS): K 1, k2tog, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k 1 – 23 (29, 35, 41) sts.
K 3 rows. Rep Dec Row every 4th row 4 (4, 5, 7) more times – 15 (21, 25, 27) sts.

UNDERPIECE
Cast on 11 (13, 15, 17) sts. Work in garter st until piece measures 4½ (7¼, 10¼, 10¾) in. [11.5 (18.5, 26, 27.5) cm] from beg, end with a WS row.

Dec Row (RS): K 1, k2tog, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k 1 – 9 (11, 13, 15) sts.
K 4 rows. Rep Dec Row every 5th row 2 (3, 4, 5) more times – 5 sts.

VERY EASY & VERY FAST pattern to follow. I have made 4 of these sweaters so far. 3 XL for my German Shepherd and one M size. Because I do not like seaming I calculated where I would be connecting the under-piece and then picked up a stitch from the left side, cast on the required stitches for the bottom-piece, picked up a stitch from the right side of the top piece and just knitted back and forth picking up a stitch at each of the next rib rows on each end until it was time for the decreases. Then I reconnected at the collar and continued the pickup/connection process.
Also, I agree that this sweater would be nicer with some ribbing for a collar and possibly arms. So, I converted the first inch or two of the top piece to a 2x2 rib. For the collar of both the top and bottom, I chose not to bind off at the last row. Instead I put the stitches from the top piece on a holder until I was done with the bottom piece. Then when I was done with the last row of the bottom piece I simply continued knitting the top piece stitches that were on the collar in a 2x2 rib.
For the M size sweater I followed the instructions as written with the exception of the collar (I used my method as previously mentioned). I added the 2x2 ribbing as previously mentioned, then seamed the sides with a whip stitch between rib rows.. Looked nice. Then I picked up 16 stitches (4 st top, 4 st on R and L sides, & 4 st bottom) and knitted a 2x2 rib. Looks nice.
