12 sts = 4 in. [10 cm] in Pattern Stitch. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Foundation Row:
Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 1 (RS): Sc in first sc, *ch 1, skip 1 sc, sc in next sc; rep from * to end. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2 (WS): Sc in first sc, *sc in next ch-1 space, ch 1, skip next sc; rep from * ending sc in next ch-1 space, sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc in first sc, *ch 1, skip next sc, sc in next ch-1 space; rep from *, ending ch 1, skip 1 sc, sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn.
Rep Rows 2 and 3 for pat.

Ch 70 (76, 82).
Foundation Row: Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 69 (75, 81) sc. Ch 1, turn. Beg with Row 1, work in Pattern Stitch until piece measures 21 (23, 25) in. [53.5 (58.5, 63.5) cm] from beg.
Note: Make sure to take all measurements hanging weight: Hang piece for several hours to allow for proper measurement.
Shape armholes: Keeping to pattern, slip st across 3 sts, work in pat to last 3 sts, turn. Dec 1 st each end every other row 3 times - 57 (63, 69) sts. Work even in pattern until armholes measure 9 (91/2, 101/2) in. [23 (24.3, 26.8) cm]. Fasten off.

RIGHT FRONT (including pocket and collar) Ch 70 (76, 82) [Note These numbers are correct].
Work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 69 (75, 81) sc. Ch 1, turn. Beg with Row 1, work in pattern until piece measures 5 (6, 6) in. [12.5 (15, 15) cm] from beg, end with a WS row.
Shape pocket
Next row (RS):
Work in pattern to last 12 sts, turn (leaving these 12 sts unworked hereafter). Note: Mark this edge for decs. Keeping to pattern, dec 1 st at marked edge every row 11 (14, 17) times - 46 (49, 52) sts. Work even in pattern until Right Front measures 11 (12, 12) in. [28 (30.5, 30.5) cm] from beg, ending with a RS row.
Shape neck
Next row (WS):
Work to last 14 sts, dec 1, place marker, work last 12 sts. Working 12 collar sts even, dec 1 st at marker every 3 rows 13 times (AFTER marker on RS rows and BEFORE marker on WS rows); AT THE SAME TIME, when piece measures 21 (23, 25) in. [53.5 (58.5, 63.5) cm] from beg, shape armhole same as back - 26 (29, 32) sts. Work even until armhole measures 9 (91/2, 101/2) in. [23 (24.5, 27) cm] from beg, ending WS. Continue on 12 collar sts only for another 5 in. [12.5 cm] or until collar reaches center back of neck. Fasten off.

LEFT FRONT (including pocket and collar)
Work as for Right Front, reversing shaping.

For cuff, ch 12.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 11 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc-tbl (through back loop) in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Rep Row 2 until cuff measures 9 in. [23 cm] when slightly stretched. Fasten off. Work 41 sc evenly spaced along one long edge of cuff. Work in pattern, inc 1 st each end of every 3rd row 11 (13, 15) times - 63 (67, 71) sts. Work even until Sleeve measures 22 in. [56 cm] from beg. Fasten off.

Sew shoulder seams. Turn pocket and collar to RS. [Note: Each front piece is doubled back on itself at lower edge, and lower side seam is 3 thicknesses.] Sew side seams through all thicknesses (including pocket). Sew pocket to lower edge of Jacket. Sew collar along center back neck. Fold the RS of collar along the WS of back and sew invisibly along back neck. Sew Sleeve seams, reversing seam on cuff. Set in sleeves, easing in fullness. From RS, work 1 row of sc along Left Front pocket edge, around entire collar and along Right Front pocket edge. Weave in ends.

This is a lovely looking jacket, but I have struggled with the pattern and, after pulling it apart multiple times, have finally given up!
