9 1/2 sc + 9 rnds = 4 in. (10 cm).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

1. Cap is worked in continuous rnds (spiral) through back loops only. Do not join and do not turn.
2. To change color, work last st of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops to complete the st. Do not fasten off old color. Carry color not in use up wrong side of piece until needed.

With B, ch 5; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1 (Right Side): Ch 1, work 8 sc in ring; do not join, work in continuous rnds (spiral) - 8 sc. Place marker in first st for beg of rnd; move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Note: Beginning on Rnd 2, work through back loops only.
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around - 16 sc at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 3: *Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around - 24 sc.
Rnd 4: *Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around changing to A in last st - 32 sc.
Rnd 5: *Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around - 40 sc.
Rnd 6: *Sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around - 48 sc.
Rnd 7: Sc in each st around, changing to B in last st.
With B, rep Rnd 7 three times, changing to A in last st.
With A, rep Rnd 7 three times, changing to B in the last st.
Fasten off A.

Union St. Cap Reviewed by Cate Murray on 2014-09-29 ****
I used a K hook, and next time would definitely use a large one.
I did all the stitches in the back loops, except for the dbl crochets, and the visor keeps its shape fairly well once it's on your head.
