9 1/2 dc = about 4 in. (10 cm).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

1. Cowl is worked in joined rnds. Do not turn work at end of rnds.
2. Sts are worked into the spaces between sts, rather than into the sts.

Ch 60; taking care not to twist the ch; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc in this rnd and in all following rnds), dc in each ch around; join with sl st in top of beg ch - 60 dc at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 2: Sl st in first sp between sts (between the beg ch of previous rnd and the next dc), ch 3, dc in each sp between sts around; join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Repeat Rnd 2 until piece measures about 17 in. (43 cm) from beg.
Fasten off.

Weave in ends.

beg = begin(s)(ning) ch(s) = chain(s)
dc = double crochet rnd(s) = round(s)
sl st = slip stitch st(s) = stitch(es)

Flattering Cowl Reviewed by Tara Williams on 2015-01-27 ****
I personally don't want a 17 inch cowl. It felt like I was literally being swallowed. This is beautiful, thick plush yarn that I use all the time and 17 inches thick you might as well wrap a baby blanket around your neck. I made mine a bit less than that and it is still a perfectly cowl shaped, well, cowl without feeling like a python. I made mine in Claret which I thought I would hate because it looked like burgundy in the picture but is actually raspberry Iwith hot pink hints.
