GAUGE:

12 sc + 14 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm).

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

sc2tog (sc 2 sts together) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.

NOTES:

1. Hat is worked in joined rnds from the top down. Join at the end of each rnd, but do not turn.
2. After Brim is worked, it is folded and secured to form a double layer.
3. Hat is embellished with a Band and a ‘Button’. Band and ‘Button’ are sewn to Hat with decorative backstitches, worked in contrasting color.

HAT

With A, ch 2.
Rnd 1 (RS): Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; join with sl st in first sc – 6 sc at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, work 2 sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc – 12 sc at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, (work 2 sc in next st, sc in next st) 6 times; join with sl st in first sc – 18 sc.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, (work 2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts) 6 times; join with sl st in first sc – 24 sc.
Rnd 5: Ch 1, (work 2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts) 6 times; join with sl st in first sc – 30 sc.

Rnd 35: Ch 1, sc in first 10 sts, sc2tog, (sc in next 12 sts, sc2tog) 5 times, sc in last 2 sts; join with sl st in first sc – 78 sc.
Rnd 36: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sts, sc2tog, (sc in next 11 sts, sc2tog) 5 times, sc in last 9 sts; join with sl st in first sc – 72 sc.
Rnd 37: Ch 1, sc in first 7 sts, sc2tog, (sc in next 10 sts, sc2tog) 5 times, sc in last 3 sts; join with sl st in first sc – 66 sc.
Fold brim along foldline to the inside of Hat, along Rnd 31, matching the sts of Rnd 37 to the unworked back loops of Rnd 23.

Rnd 38: Working through both thicknesses, and inserting hook into next st of Rnd 37 and corresponding back loop of Rnd 23, sl st in each st around. Fasten off.

Reinforce Brim
Flatten brim thoroughly, matching the sts of the top layer and the bottom layer. Work from top side of brim, and begin in any st of the rnd below the foldline. Hold working yarn on underside of brim.

Sl St Rnd: Insert empty hook through both layers, from topside to underside; leaving a long tail, yarn over and draw loop through to topside, *insert hook through both layers of next st, yarn over and draw loop through to top side and through loop on hook (sl st made); repeat from * around. Fasten off.

Note: For additional reinforcement, work Sl St Rnd around additional rnds of brim, as desired.

BAND
With A, ch 70.
Rnd 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across to last ch, (sc, dc, ch 2, sl st in dc just made, dc, sc) in last ch; working across opposite side of foundation ch, sc in next 68 ch. Fasten off.

‘BUTTON’
With A, ch 2.
Rnd 1: Ch 2, work 11 dc in 2nd ch from hook; join with sl st in first dc. Fasten off.

FINISHING
Wrap Band around Hat, just above brim. With B, backstitch Band to Hat, sewing all the way around both long edges of the Band. With B, back stitch ‘Button’ to top of Hat, sewing all the way around the edge of the ‘Button’.
