Image of Beginner's Beanie
Bright and colorful for even the grayest mornings, this beanie glows in any shade of Homespun. The hat is crocheted in the round from the top down to the brim, and is a perfect project for a new crocheter interested in practicing crochet in the round and basic increases.

Beginner's Beanie

Lion Brand® Homespun®

8 single crochet and 10 rows = 4 in. (10 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

1. Beanie is worked in continuous rounds. Do not join at end of rounds.
2. Round 1 begins at the top of the Beanie. You will be working in single crochet and increasing the number of stitches to create the Beanie.
3. To increase a stitch, the pattern will tell you to work 2 single crochet in the next stitch. By working 2 stitches in 1 stitch, you have increased 1 stitch.
4. At the end of each increase round, you will see - with a specific number of stitches. This number tells you how many stitches you will have after working the increases on that round.
5. Before you fasten off, try the Beanie on and decide whether it's the right length for you. If you'd like it to be longer, just crochet another round or two.

Chain 2.
Round 1: Work 6 single crochet in 2nd chain from hook, place marker for beginning of round - 6 stitches.
Round 2: (Single crochet in next stitch, 2 single crochet in next stitch) 3 times - 9 stitches.
Round 3: (Single crochet in each of next 2 stitches, 2 single crochet in next stitch) 3 times - 12 stitches.
Round 4: (Single crochet in each of next 2 stitches, 2 single crochet in next stitch) 4 times - 16 stitches.
Round 5: (Single crochet in each of next 3 stitches, 2 single crochet in next stitch) 4 times - 20 stitches.
Round 6: (Single crochet in each of next 4 stitches, 2 single crochet in next stitch) 4 times - 24 stitches.
Round 7: (Single crochet in each of next 5 stitches, 2 single crochet in next stitch) 4 times - 28 stitches.
Round 8: Single crochet in each st around).
Round 9: (Single crochet in each of next 6 stitches, 2 single crochet in next stitch) 4 times - 32 stitches.
Round 10: Single crochet in each stitch around.
Round 11: (Single crochet in each of next 7 stitches, 2 single crochet in next stitch) 4 times - 36 stitches.
Round 12: Single crochet in each stitch around.
Round 13: (Single crochet in each of next 8 stitches, 2 single crochet in next stitch) 4 times - 40 stitches.
Next Rounds: Continue to work 1 single crochet in each stitch around until piece measures 10 in. (25.5 cm) from beginning.
Fasten off.

Following package directions, make a pom-pom. Tie pom-pom to top of Beanie. Weave in ends.

So easy and quick! I made mine without the pompom. Made one for my hubby too. This was a great first project.
