GAUGE:

6 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) with larger needle and one strand each of A and B held together.
EXACT GAUGE IS NOT ESSENTIAL FOR THIS PROJECT.

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

sk2p (slip-k2tog-pass slipped st over) A double decrease worked as follows: 1. Insert right needle as if to knit, and slip the next st from the left needle to the right needle. 2. Knit the next 2 sts together. 3. With tip of left needle, lift the slipped st (the 2nd st on right needle) up and over the k2tog (first st on right needle) and off the needle – you have decreased 2 sts. M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal strand lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop – 1 st increased.

NOTES:

Capelet is worked with 2 strands of yarn held together – one strand each of A and B.

CAPELET
Beginning at lower edge with circular needle and one strand each of A and B held together, cast on 94 sts.
Rows 1-3: Knit, for Garter st border.
Row 4 (RS): Knit.
Row 5: K2, p across to last 2 sts, k2.
Repeat the last 2 rows until the piece measures about 10 in. (25.5 cm) from the beginning, the last row you work should be a WS row.
In the following rows, you will decrease (dec) the sts to shape the neck of the Capelet.
Dec Row 1 (RS): K22, k3tog, k44, sk2p, k22. You will have 90 sts at the end of this row.
Row 2 (WS): K2, p across to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 3: K21, k3tog, k42, sk2p, k21. You will have 86 sts at the end of this row.
Row 4: Rep Row 2.
Row 5: K20, k3tog, k40, sk2p, k20. You will have 82 sts at the end of this row.
Row 6: Rep Row 2.
Row 7: K19, k3tog, k38, sk2p, k19. You will have 78 sts at the end of this row.
Row 8: Rep Row 2.
Row 9: K18, k3tog, k36, sk2p, k18. You will have 74 sts at the end of this row.
Ridge Row (WS): K2, (k3, k2tog) 3 times, k40, (k2tog, K3) 3 times, k2. You will have 68 sts at the end of this row.

Shape Hood
Next Row (RS): Knit.
Next Row: K2, p across to last 2 sts, k2.
Rep last 2 rows once.
Next Row (RS): K33, M1, k2, M1, k33 You will have 70 sts at the end of this row.
Next Row: K2, p across to last 2 sts, k2.
Next Row: K34, M1, k2, M1, k34.
Next Row: K2, p across to last 2 sts, k2.
Next Row: Knit.
Rep last 2 rows until piece measures 12 in. (30.5 cm) from Ridge Row.

3-Needle Bind Off
Bend needle in center, so that you can hold both needle tips tog in one hand, dividing sts so that half are on each end of needle. With spare needle, knit tog 1 st from each needle tip, *knit tog 1 st from each needle, pass first st worked over 2nd to bind off, repeat from * across. Cut yarns and pull through last st to secure.

FINISHING
Knitted Cord With one strand each of A and B and with 2 double pointed needles, cast on 3 sts. Knit the 3 sts. Do not turn work. *Slide sts to other end of needle and knit them, pulling yarn tightly across the back of the work, (do not turn work); rep from * until cord is about 48 in. (122 cm) long. To bind off, thread yarn through large-eyed blunt needle and pull it through all 3 stitches 2 or 3 times.
Weave the cord through the Ridge Row. Fold each end of the cord into a loop, sew with a few sts to secure.
Sew buttons to front edge of Capelet, one at each end of Ridge Row.
Weave in ends.

Optional:
Make a longer knitted cord to use as a drawstring and omit the buttons.
