HAT Crochet Cast-On 1. Make a slip knot and insert hook through knot (photo below). Do not tighten the loop onto the hook; you will be inserting your hook into again.

2. Wrap yarn over hook and pull through slip knot. 3. Wrap yarn over hook again and draw through loop just made - you have cast-on 1 st. 4. Insert hook into slip knot loop again. (photo below).

5. Rep Steps 2-4 until a total of 5 (6) sts have been cast-on (photo below).

Divide sts onto 3 needles (photo below). Place marker for beginning of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts. Slip marker at the beginning of every rnd.

Rnd 1 (RS): (Kfb in next st) 5 times, k0 (1) - 10 (11) sts at the end of this rnd. Note: The '0' means that there will be one st remaining to knit at the end of the rnd for the M/L size only. Rnd 2 and all even-numbered rnds: Knit. Rnd 3: *K1, yo; rep from * around - 20 (22) sts at the end of this rnd. Note: When sts have been sufficiently increased, change to circular needle. Rnd 5: *K2, yo; rep from * around - 30 (33) sts at the end of this rnd. Rnd 7: *K3, yo; rep from * around - 40 (44) sts at the end of this rnd. Rnd 9: *K4, yo; rep from * around - 50 (55) sts at the end of this rnd. Rnd 11: *K5, yo; rep from * around - 60 (66) sts at the end of this rnd. Rnd 13: *K6, yo; rep from * around - 70 (77) sts at the end of this rnd. Work in St st worked in rnds (k every rnd) until piece measures about 7 in. (18 cm) from beginning. Next Rnd: *K7, yo; rep from * around - 80 (88) sts at the end of this rnd. Next 6 Rnds: Knit. Next Rnd: K4, yo, *k8, yo; rep from * to last 4 sts, k4 - 90 (99) sts at the end of this rnd. Next 6 Rnds: Knit. Next Rnd (Turning Ridge): Purl. Next 3 Rnds: Knit. Bind off, leaving a long yarn tail.
FINISHING Using pliers, form wire into a circle, overlapping ends by about 1 in. (2.5 cm) (photo below).

Wrap wire ends with duct tape to secure (photo below).

Lay wire circle onto WS of Hat. Fold Hat edge, along turning ridge, over wire (photo below).

Thread yarn tail into blunt needle and whipstitch edge of Hat, securing wire (photo below).

Weave in ends. |
