GAUGE:

22 sts + 21 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Mesh st. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

sc2tog (sc decrease) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook - 1 st decreased.

PATTERN STITCH
Mesh Stitch (multiple of 2 sts + 1)
Row 1:
Ch 1, turn, sc in first sc, *ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, sc in next sc; rep from * to end of row.
Rep Row 1 for Mesh st pattern.

NOTES:

1. Front and Back are worked separately and, except for neck shaping, are identical.
2. Front and Back are worked from lower edge upwards. Decreases are worked for waist shaping and increases are worked for bust shaping.
3. Mesh st is reversible, so either side of your work can be the right side. As you work each piece, decide which side you would like for the right side, and mark that side with a pin or scrap of yarn.
4. When you see 'work even' in the instructions, this means to continue in the pattern st you have established without changing the st count by increasing or decreasing.

BACK
Ch 90 (98, 106, 114, 122) loosely.
Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook, *ch 1, sk next ch, sc in next ch; rep from * to end of row - 89 (97, 105, 113, 121) sts: 45 (49, 53, 57, 61) sc and 44 (48, 52, 56, 60) ch-1 sps at the end of this row.

NOTES

1. In all of the remaining sections you will be instructed to work in Mesh st "as established", this means that you should maintain the Mesh st pattern as it has been worked up to this point. There are 2 important properties of the Mesh st pattern that you will need to maintain.
a. Each row of the Mesh st pattern beg and ends with at least one sc.
b. In each row of the pattern, sc sts are worked into sc sts, and a ch-1 is worked over each ch-1 sp (and the ch-1 sp is skipped).
2. To decrease over a ch-1 sp and an sc, sk the ch-1 sp (working an sc in each sc on either side of the ch-1 sp). To decrease over 2 sc sts, work an sc2tog.
3. To increase, work 2 sc into one st.

Row 1: Work in Mesh st as established over first 21 (21, 22, 22, 23) sts; leave rem sts unworked for neck and 2nd shoulder - 21 (21, 22, 22, 23) sts at the end of this row.

Classic Sleeveless Top Reviewed by Sonia on 2014-04-11 *****
I really like this pattern, and plan to make a second one soon. Someone commented that the yarn is scratchy, and I originally thought this as well. Yet, the stitch used in this pattern keeps the yarn light and soft throughout - not stiff like I had originally feared it might be. I am fairly new to crocheting, but I found this to be an easy pattern to follow. It takes a while to complete, but the results were well worth it, as it turned out beautiful and fit right to size (I made it in medium, and wear a size 12.)
