Glamorous Fair Isle Hat

GAUGE: 30 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) in Fair Isle patterns. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: PATTERN STITCH
K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds (multiple of 2 sts)
Rnd 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.

NOTES: 1. Scarf Hat is worked in Fair Isle colorwork. Carry unused color across WS of work.
2. Fair Isle colorwork can be worked from written instructions or by following the charts.
3. When following charts, work in Stockinette st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) and work from right to left on every rnd.

HAT
With smaller circular needle and A, cast on 140 sts. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
With A, work in K1, p1 Rib until piece measures about 4 1/2 in. (11.5 cm) from beg.
Change to larger circular needle and B.
With B, knit 1 rnd.

Shape Crown
Rnd 1: *With A, k5, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd - 120 sts at the end of this rnd. Join D.
Rnd 2: *With A, k3; with D, k1; with A, k2; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 3: *With A, k2; with D, k3; with A, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 4: *With A, k1; with D, k5; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 5: *With D, k3; with A, k1; with D, k2; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 6: *With D, k2; with A, k1; with D, k1, with A, k1; with D, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 7: *With D, k1; with A, k1; rep from * to end of rnd.
Cut A, continue with D only.
Rnd 8: *K4, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd - you will have 100 sts remaining at the end of this rnd.
Change to double pointed needles.
Note: To change to double pointed needles, work Rnd 9, using one needle at a time to knit sts from circular needle.
Rnd 9: *K3, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd - 80 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 10: *K2, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd - 60 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 11: *K1, k2tog; rep from * to end of rnd - 40 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 12: *K2tog; rep from * to end of rnd - 20 sts at the end of this rnd.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining sts and pull to gather the sts together. Knot yarn tail securely.
FINISHING
Weave in ends.
