GAUGE:
8 single crochet = 4 in (10 cm). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
HAT
Chain 19. Row 1: Single crochet in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across - 18 single crochet. Row 2: Chain 1, turn, working in back loops only, single crochet in each single crochet across.
Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 19 in. (48.5 cm) from beginning. Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through ends of rows along one long edge and pull to gather for top of Hat. Knot securely.
FINISHING
Seam ends to make Hat. Pom-Pom
Following package directions make a pom-pom. Tie pom-pom to top of Hat.
Weave in ends.
this is a delightful, fool-proof pattern for a nice hat. i like it because i always had trouble crocheting in the round, usually ending up with a crumpled doily instead of a hat. but this pattern works well and looks great. you can adapt this pattern for a smaller hook and thinner yarn by chaining off longer and adding extra rows. it looks good with any yarn, and it is so much fun to make! it's a classic!
