This hat is simple to make, but colorful because it uses multicolored Hometown USA. Great for a beginner to practice knitting, purling, and a simple decrease.

GAUGE:
9 sts + 13 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Stockinette stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Colorful Beginner's Hat Reviewed by Paula Charette on 2011-11-02
I made this hat using a pink hometown USA yarn. As I was making it for a toddler I casted on 40 stitches instead of 44. I'm so glad I chose this pattern, and so is my daughter.
