GAUGE:

16 sts + 24 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) using larger needles.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

kfb (knit into front and then back)
An increase worked as follows:
1. Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.
2. Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
3. Drop the st from your left hand needle - you have increased 1 st.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them together - 1 st decreased.

SLEEVES (make 2)
Note:
Sleeves are knit first then, set aside. Sleeves will be joined to Body after armhole is shaped.
With smaller double pointed needles, cast on 36 sts. Divide sts onto 3 needles. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Rnd 1: Knit.
Rnd 2: Purl.
Rep last 2 rnds 2 more times for lower Sleeve border.
Change to larger double pointed needles.
Knit 5 rnds.
Next (Increase) Rnd: K1, kfb, knit to last 2 sts, kfb, k1 - 38 sts at end of this rnd.
Rep last 6 rnds 2 (3, 4, 5) more times - 42 (44, 46, 48) sts when all increases have been completed.
Work in St st in the rnd (k every rnd) until piece measures 5 1/2 (6 1/2, 7 1/2, 8 1/2) in. (14 (16.5, 19, 21.5 cm)) from beg.
Next Rnd: Bind off 3 sts, k to last 3 sts, bind off last 3 sts - 36 (38, 40, 42) sts rem.
Cut yarn and slip sts onto a holder.

Bellflower Baby Hoodie Reviewed by Sandra Klawon on 2012-02-23 *****
I really liked this pattern because there are only 3 small seams to sew. The directions were easy to follow and the sweater turned out great. I made in the Pink Sands Amazing yarn as pictured and it looks just like the picture.
