16 sts + 9 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) over Waffle Pattern. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

FPDC (front post double crochet) Yo, insert hook from front to back then to front, going around the dc post, draw up a loop, (yo and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice. Skip st behind the FPDC.

Waffle Pattern
Foundation Row:
Dc in 4th ch from hook (beg ch counts as 1 dc), dc in each ch across.
Row 1 (WS): Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), turn. Skip first st, dc in next st, *FPDC in each of next 2 sts, dc in next st; rep from * across, end dc in last st, dc in top of turning ch.
Row 2 (RS): Ch 3, turn. Skip first st, *FPDC in next st, dc in each of next 2 sts; rep from * across, end with FPDC in last dc, dc in top of turning ch.
Rep rows 1 and 2 for Waffle Pattern.
