14 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (k every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Kfb (increase 1 st) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st.

Cast on 2 sts.
Inc Row: K to last st, kfb in last st – 3 sts.
Rep Inc Row until you have a total of 19 sts.
Dec Row: K to last 2 sts, k2tog – 18 sts.
Rep Dec Row until 9 sts rem.
Continue to inc to 19 sts and dec to 9 sts until piece measures about 60 in. (152.5 cm) from beginning, end with 9 sts. Rep Dec Row until 2 sts rem.
K2tog. Cut yarn and pull through rem loop.

Weave in ends.

Coastal Zig Zag Scarf Reviewed by RuthAnn Hines on 2014-10-22 *****
You have this pattern in several places.

I have made it in all kinds of yarn and colors. I made one in red, white and blue thin yarn and "lost it" I made one in olympic colors and put the plastic rings usually used for stitch markers, on each color. It was a big hit.

I have made one in silver and red in light weight yarn and pin small things on it. On the all red one of thin yarn I have a heart pined on one end. I have made them for our church yard sale.
The red and white in thin yarn I put santa on one end and reindeer on the other end.
I don't have pictures.
