When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. I Love making these. I use magic loop method, so I don't have to seam, and also put two rows of rib stitch around the heel to avoid the crochet I don't know how to do.
Others said these were too big, so I started with a size 8 needle. Very loose. Next air was with a 7. Still loose, but not so bad. Last pair was with a size 6 needle. They fit my size 9 feet perfectly.
I should also say, that I used a German Cast On and made them from the top down so they would fit a larger calf and ankle. Even with a loose bind off, you still get a tighter edge on cast off.
With the Vanna's Choice yarn, size 6 needle seems to be the way to go. With the Amazing yarn, a size 7 needle works best for my feet.
