GAUGE:
9 sts = 8 in. (20.5 cm) in pattern.
GAUGE IS NOT ESSENTIAL FOR THIS PROJECT. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

I love this pattern! I made this as a wedding gift for my brother who got married in September. I would suggest doing the fringe when you have three balls of yarn left. This is a great pattern for beginners.I have to say that the needles get REALLY heavy after a while. And being 12, it took a while before I had all the yarn for this project. Besides the price of the yarn and how much yarn it uese, this pattern is great!
