Walk of Fame Star Afghan

Lion Brand® Homespun® - Glitterspun® (old)

10 hdc + 7 rows = 4 in. [10 cm] with A and larger hook. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

When changing colors, work last hdc to the point where there are 3 loops on hook, yarn over with new color and pull through all loops on hook.

Use separate balls of yarn for each section of color. Do not carry unused colors across wrong side of work.

STAR (Make 24)

With smaller hook and D, ch 2
Rnd 1 (right side):
5 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 3 sc in each sc around, join with sl st in first sc – 15 sc.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, [sc in next sc, ch 6, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, tr in next ch, tr in base of first sc, sk 2 sc] 4 times, join with sl st in beg sc.
Fasten off, leaving a 12 in. [30.5 cm] tail for sewing.
Place wrong sides of 2 stars tog and sew edges tog. Repeat for all pairs of stars to yield 12 stars. Weave in ends.

With larger hook and A, ch 90.
Hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in each ch across – 89 hdc (beg ch counts as hdc).
Next Row: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc here and through out), turn, hdc in each hdc across. Rep last row until piece measures 9 in. [23 cm].
Begin Chart
Rows 1 and 2:
With A, ch 2, turn, hdc in next 7 sts, with B, hdc in next 73 sts, with A, hdc in last 8 hdc.
Row 3: With A, ch 2, turn, hdc in next 7 sts, with B, hdc in next 36 sts, with 1 strand C and 1 strand D held tog, hdc in next st, with B, hdc in next 36 sts, change to A, hdc in last 8 hdc.
Rows 4 – 52: Continue in hdc, working chart as established until chart has been completed.
Row 53: With A, ch 2, turn, hdc in each hdc across. Repeat last row until lower border measures 9 in. [23 cm].
Rnd 1:
Join 1 strand each of C and D held together anywhere along edge of Afghan. With larger hook, ch 2, hdc evenly around outside edge of Afghan, working 3 hdc at each corner. Join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Rnd 2: Ch 2, * hdc in each hdc to corner; 2 hdc in corner st, drop C and working only with D, [ch 5, sc in tip of one star, sl st in each ch of ch-5, sc in base of corner hdc] 3 times, pick up D and working with 1 strand each of C and D held tog, hdc once more in corner st; rep from * around, join with sl st in top of beg ch.

Weave in ends.

Lonestar Afghan Reviewed by Tommi Johnstone on 2012-11-17 *****
I modified this pattern and added some sections out to the right to make a Texas flag blanket. I'd had the idea to make this for my dad for quite some time, but couldn't quite figure out how to do the star portion until I found this pattern. It was very easy, though keeping a good count is essential.
