Warm Hearts

3 years ago, I starte the Warm Hearts Group of Holland Free Methodist Church in Holland, Ohio. We began with 6 ladies who had a love of crochet and knitting and had a heart to give.

I had always loved doing hand work, and wanted to find a way to help others with the skills the Lord had given me. Dorcas, of the Bible, was my inspiration. I did some on-line searching for organizations that requested warm, knit or crochet items, for those in need. I approached our Pastor and asked if I could start a group at our church.

After the enthusiastic approval, I set up a display in our foyer and ladies started signing up to become involved!
The group has grown to 18 participants.....from young people 8 yrs and up to seniors who are in their 80's. You can see some of their pictures here:

We have ladies who have had to overcome physical challenges, such as MS and Cereberal Palsy and continue to pursue their love of knitting or LEARN to knit for the first time. (I am so proud of their perseverance!!).
We are a very prolific group. Each month I set up two 4' X 8' tables so the ladies have a place to display what they have made - everything from lap robes for nursing homes to wool socks for Afghanastan. On another table I have the boxes of yarn, that has been donated to our group, organized acording to color and weight. We use Lionbrand Homespun for Prayer Shawls, Jamie for babie items, Fishermans Wool for items sent to Afghanastan.

We send items to Warming Families, "Faith, Hope and Charity" of Ohio, Afghans for Afghanistan, area nursing homes, Native American organizations for the babies and elders, Children In Common and a miriad of other worthy organizations. One high-light of our meeting is reading the thank-you notes that are sent to us.

I would encourage other ladies to start a group such as Warm Hearts in their community or church. We have such a good time and learn so much from each other. Not only does such a group help those in need, it also helps those who may feel they can't contribute because of a physical challenge or difficulty in leaving their home. Give it a try!
