Stitches from the Heart

In answer to your query about charitble organizations, I would like to tell you about my favorite, Stitches From the Heart.

It is a non-profit organization started by Kathy Silverton when she started knitting for new-borns in her area after she heard that some were going home from hospitals in only their diapers. Some of her friends got involved and it grew from there. Today there are over 3700 volunteers knitting and crocheting and quilting for disavantaged babies all over the country. There are no membership fees, only the cost of mailing the baby things to the center where they are distributed.

We can, if we wish subscribe to the Stitches Gazette which comes to us quarterly and costs $10.00 which goes to help pay for boxes, shipping etc. At this writing Stitches has sent out over 127,350 hats, booties, sweaters, blankets etc to over 380 hospitals. Stitches is only 4 years old and growing. In addition to the babies things, we donate knitting needles and yarn to over 92 senior citizen facilities so that they also can contribute to the babies if they wish.

I learned about Stitches from a knitting magazine, I don't even remember which one now, but have enjoyed my projects very much and feel really good about knowing that I have contibuted to warming and comforting a baby who might otherwise be cold. We hear from the caregivers and parents of these babies in the Gazette and the nurses say that the things the babies recieve from us are likly the nicest things they will ever own.

I don't have as much time as I would like and also have arthritis in my hands which limits my knitting and crocheting somewhat, but still manage to do a little afghan, a sweater, some booties and caps each year.

I do use Lion Brand yarns and I like Jamie Classic and Baby Jamie, also Baby Soft. I have also used Pompadour.

Of all the things people could do who have the talent and knowledge, knitting and crocheting for sick and disadvantaged babies is to me the best. We get pictures of some of the babies in the Gazette and it truely warms the heart.

Thanks for letting me share my thoughts with you
