Hats for Homeless and ABC Quilts (Blankets)

I am a high school art teacher. One of the courses I teach is called Lost Arts, which is basically "fiber handicrafts" that I remembered learning from my mother, aunt, and grandmother, who learned it from their fmily members. Knitting, crocheting, hand sewing, and embroidery have evolved into a fine art and high fashion. Few of my students today have learned any these of skills in a 'right of passage' on the home front, so it made sense to create a course that gave them them skills, a context of history, and ways to apply them to a community purpose.

In the process of developing the course, I came across two women who were committed to local programs to help others. One is Elaine Brown of Branford, CT who heads the Hats for Homeless. She teaches adult-ed courses on crocheting hats. Anyone can take the course and donations of completed hats are optional. I use the same pattern in my high school course and then invite students to donate hats as a community service. There are always generous donations at the end of each semester. I have students not in the course showing up at lunch for lessons as well. Each of my own sample hats (3 per semester) goes into the donation box as well.

The second organization the students help out is the ABC Quilts. This was student initiated. They actually don't quilt, but knit or crochet squares that are sewn together into baby blankets that we donate to a local chapter of the organization run by Mrs. Johnson in Guilford, CT. She then distributes the blankets to hospitals in Connecticut for newborns who have challenges of survival for various reasons. This project is required as the final exam in the course and every student involved takes it seriously and reaps 4-6 blankets per year.

We use worsted weight yarns, and Lion Brand is among the assortment. Every so often we get a donation from someone cleaning out their collection of yarns.
