When I was in prison in 2006, my daughter told me that her church was building an orphanage in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico. For some reason, God spoke to me and told me that this was the ministry he wanted me in. I had been making things for the homeless while in prison and prayed about God's will. When I got out, I attended church and four of us started this ministry together. We are now 8 months old and are few (about 10), but we get together every Tuesday night and crochet. We make beanies, scarfs, slippers, blankets, ponchos and sweaters. It has been slow and a struggle since most of the ladies did not know how to crochet and it was a teaching/learning process at first, but now it warms my heart to see a big smile on their faces when they finish a project.
On December 22nd, my daughter and two other women, took what we had made and gave them away at a small church in Nogales during our churches Christmas present giveaway. My daughter says that they were mobbed by children, adults and elderly, all wanting something to keep them warm. She was saddened by the fact that we did not have nearly enough for what was needed. But she said that the gratitude she received for such a small gift made her feel so much love, compassion and empathy.
We have started stock piling again now because we need to have at least 600 beanies, scarfs and slippers made by next December. We also need to have 100 blankets finished for the orphanage. It is a large task for such a small group, but like the little engine said "We can do it".
We are looking for a sponsor to help us get the yarn we need. We have received some donations from church members, but mostly our group buys yarn on sale at Michaels or Wal-Mart.
So, we are asking for your help. There are thousands of women out there that can crochet one beanie and scarf; Or, maybe your have yarn or old blankets stashed in a closet or box somewhere that you aren't using. Please give us a hand. This is one small project, but there are other orphanages or senior citizen homes in this small border town that we can help too. It gets very cold in Nogales in the winter and often snows and the rain is like piercing icicles.
There are children living in dumps or on the street with no shoes or socks, no one to care about lending a helping hand. It is a small gesture we ask. Our church is VIDA NUEVA or NEW LIFE Church of God, 330 W. Nebraska, Tucson, AZ 85706 and their phone number is (520) 889-5422. Pastor Sam can tell you about us or you can read about the orphanage on the church website www.vidanueva.cc/. My personal E-mail is email@example.com.
I wish I could post the picture of my daughter giving out the items, so you can see so many wanting but only a few getting. Yet, in the freezing cold wind you could see lots of smiles and tears.
