Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

Hats for the Homeless

For the last ten years, I have knitted and crocheted mostly hats, with some scarfs and afghan blankets for the homeless living on the streets of Houston. Most years, I make approximately seventy-five to one hundred items during the summer, of which I add as many as fifty more as winter approaches.

I started doing this as an act of providing something to the homeless. With not much money, I knew that I could knit and crochet to provide a means of warmth when the winter cold sets in. Hats are very popular with the homeless and they make up the majority of the items that I give out.

While I have given hats to organizations such as The Salvation Army Women and Children's Shelter, I usually drive around the downtown Houston area and hand out hats to the homeless personally.

Lion Brand yarns that I have used to knit and crochet these items are Wool-Ease, Homespun and Chunky-USA. I have also used various Lion Brand cotton yarns.

The first year that I started making these items, I was watching one of the local news broadcasts about The Star of Hope giving out blankets to the homeless and there was one of the homeless on the broadcast wearing one of my hats. After giving out my hats, I have seen some of the homeless wearing my hats while driving by on the street. I know that they are using them because of this. They have come running while I was giving out hats and, sadly, I have even witnessed a fight over the handout of my hats.

This is just a personal project. I enjoy doing this and it is my way to give something back to the community. I hope that reading my story and seeing my modest work and handout encourages more people to help care for the homeless.
