Knitting with Susan

A couple of years ago I started a knitting cirlce at the NYC Ronald McDonald House. We meet Thursday evenings. Mary Jo and Dana are two other volunteers who help out weekly. We teach the residents, Moms, Grandmothers and a few Dads how to knit. My thought was it would be a diversion while waiting for treatment, test results etc. Some Mom's have said if they work on more difficult patterns it takes their mind off of more troubling things. Children have been very proud of their projects. Because many are away from their homes for a long time it gives them a way of making something for somone or a pet that they miss. We've made blankets for dogs, scarves for grand parents, knit necklaces and bracelts that can be completed in one evening. It is wonderful to see when a child wants to make something for a sibling parent, etc. It's wonderful to see how proud everyone is of their new or improved skills.
We've put on a cocktail party fashion show and everyone was very proud of their accomplishments. There are people at the House from around the world so knitting also helps because of some language barriers.
We are always in need of yarn and needles since I personally underwrite the program. We've had tears of joy and sadness, I have met the bravest children in the world.
