Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

Malta Lutheran Crochet Group

I was teaching an adult crochet group at a local craft store. A few years before, I asked the community for left over yarn, for a Girl Scout troop that I lead, to teach them to crochet. I received 7 large boxes that were sitting in my basement. My husband - being a somewhat patient man - decided it was time to give it up! (he said - you or the yarn) So, I asked the ladies that I was teaching if I had any volunteers to use up the yarn, to give to local charities. I had many takers! I decided that there were too many to meet at my house - so we asked my church if they would consider letting us use the basement for one night a week. We have had up to 20 ladies and as few as 6 crochet all year, for 2 years. We made over 25 afghans in 6 months to give to the local Boys Youth Ranch near us for each boy to have one for their own. We crocheted nearly 30+ hats and mittens to give to the local food bank for the winter to give to the needy. One lady gave a whole box of slippers to the food bank to give to the elderly. We crocheted 25 Christmas stockings to give to the Kiwanis club to fill with candy for the poor children of the community for Christmas. We are now nearly up to another 25 afghans to give to the local Women's Resource Center. Plus, during this time, our pastor asked if we could make prayer shawls for the ill and bereaved of our community. So far we have done well over 50 of those! Most using not only leftovers that other people have donated, but Lion Brand Homespun yarn and many patterns from your website. All this in two years! We have received many thank you's from people who have been the recipient of one of our creations. But for us crocheters - we feel blessed knowing that someone will be getting something to keep them warm and we get the enjoyment of being together and doing new things all the time!
