Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

Knitwits of Ridgefield Park

The Knitwits is a group of 20+ ladies who get together every two weeks to share the knitted or crocheted items they have made in their spare time for the 20 charities that the group has supported for over 10 years.

Originally started as a group within AARP of RidgefieldPark, these "mature" ladies knit baby hats for the maternity units of 3 nearby hospitals, crochet lap robes and ponchos for two Veterans hospitals. They also make laprobes for several nursing homes, baby and juvenile blankets and kid's sweaters for juvenile hospital wards and a battered women's shelter; and crocheted items donated to local churches for their ill members, or as a donation to their charity bazaars. In 2003 we created and donated over 600 items to these local charities. Also in 2003, because of the extremely cold winter, we added two local homeless shelters to our list (making over 120 hats, scarves and mittens). The group has a good time praising one another's projects and generally providing friendship to one another while aiding local charities. Lion Brand has been a part of our projects, and this year, via Mr. Jack Blumenthal, has donated yarn to our group, and we have promised to send him pictures of the finished projects utilizing the luxurious chenilles for scarves, and the HomeSpun and Polarsoft for warm baby blankets and sweaters.

The "thank you" letters we have received from our charities makes everyone feel that whatever little we have done, we have received a lot in return for our efforts.
