Caring and Sharing

Guideposts Knit for Kids Sweater Project

In 1994 I took a neeedlework class sponsored by the Institute for Continuing Learning (a local Elderhostel type group) and Young Harris College. The group decided to continue after the end of the class. In 1999 I learned about the Guideposts (magazine) Knit for Kids Sweater Project. I sent for the instructions and some of us began to make sweaters (size 2-10) for the project. Over the last eight years the project has blossomed. We have a group of 20 active knitters (and crocheters) who meet weekly at Sharp Memorial United Methodist Church in Young Harris, GA, (now our sponsoring organization), plus almost as many At Home Knitters who bring their sweaters to us frequently . We have regular publicity in the local papers and welcome yarn donations and new members. So far we have not had to buy any yarn, and we have made over 1050 sweaters. A year ago the local area Electric Membership Corporation featured us in their magazine which goes out to many thousands of customers.

The sweaters are shipped to Guideposts Outreach Division in Carmel, NY, and there are repackaged and sent all over the nation and the world through such organizations as World Vision, Salvation Army and others. The website,, has maps to show that the sweaters have so far gone to 27 countries and 24 American states.

Those who are interested can download a pattern from the aforementioned website, or I will be glad to furnish the one we tweaked for a little better fit. (I am trying to send it now.)
