Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

My friend, Janet Conrad, of West Chester, PA, started Naphtali to help America's first people. among which are the Lakota Sioux of the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. They are among the poorest of the poor; no casinos, even proper shelter, paved roads, and running water are beyond the means of most. She spends two weeks there every August teaching knitting, visiting families, and getting names, ages and sizes for the two hundred plus families who have requested her help. She gets no government assistance, and accept donations of warm new clothing, knitted scarves, hats, blankets and slippers for the families. Each Thursday is shipping day, when cartons of goods go out to individual families via UPS; The people look for the brown truck to arrive. When on the reservation Janet lives as the Indians do; living in a, shall I say, shack; eating their type of food, which might include a stew made from dog. This is a 503? registered charity, tax deductible, and very much person to person. My friends "up north" knit hats and blankets which I then ship to Janet, and some of my Florida friends do likewise. It gives me great pleasure to help in this endeavor because Janet strives to preserve the dignity of our first people, who will not accept charity but will welcome gifts. I especially enjoy knitting big fluffy blankets of two strands of Lion Brand Pound of Love and size 15 needles aswell as making childrens sweater with Wool-Ease. Janets address is 1227 Clearbrook Road, West Chester, Pa. 19380. Her telephone # is 610-436-0145, if you wish to verify this information. Janet has pictures she can provide. Prepare to be shocked. Sincerely, Judith Eames
