Caring and Sharing

Caring for Cancer Patients

Two and a half years ago, my husband was diagnosed with cancer. We met with the oncology nurse who would be his primary care giver during infusion therapy. While waiting, on our first visit, to talk with the nurse I noticed many women wearing baseball hats on their bald heads. After our nurse gave us an orientation, I had an opportunity to talk with her about all the bald ladies. She told me that most of the people who were patients lost their hair and didn't have enough money to buy a wig - a baseball cap from Walmart was a big splurge for them. I asked if I could crochet or knit caps and the nurse leaped out of her chair and hugged me. I started small with leftover yarn I had at home. Now, more than 300 caps later, I try to use Lion Brand Fun Fur in each cap I make - the ladies feel the softness of their new funky colored hair. They love that the caps are machine-washable and machine-dryable. They also love having a warm head in cold weather, in air conditioning or when they sleep at night. Lion Brand Fun Fur helps to make this a fun and meaningful project.
