Knitting Challenge

I belong to a TOPS chapter in Swift Current, Saskatchewan,Canada. Each year we have a charitable project.
We have donated to the local food bank, granted Christmas wishes for Mental Health Clients and gone Christmas carolling to shut-ins.
This years project is the following.
For a program at one meeting, one of our members talked about knitting, to replace eating unnecessarily.
She challenged us to knit 8" squares which would be made into lap afghans.
Other members added ideas to the challenge and in a six month period 10 knitters made the following:

16 lap afghans, that were donated to 2 local nursing homes

350 preemie toques which were donated to Project Linus in Kitchener, Waterlook - Ontario, Canada

570 finger puppets, - 100 were taken to Lilongwe, Africa as a members daughter was going there to work with a Habitat for Humanity Group and the remaining finger puppets are being given to the local hospital lab. Children receiving blood tests are given a finger puppet.

The knitters enjoyed doing the challenge and have decided to continue with it. This time the time period will be one year and we are going to try to fill 2 pillowcases with small preemie to child sized toques. Some will knit mitts to go with the child sized toques.
Anyone who knows someone cleaning out their yarn, speaks up for it, any yarn at garage sales is purchased.
We have a box in our meeting room and the knitters help themselves.
