Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

So many needs!

I used to knit for my family but they've all grown up and live in the warm climate. Now I knit for charity and hope that I am helping people to be warmer and more comfortable than they would have been.

There are so many organizations that need help and it is hard to choose just one!

So I knit or sew each month for the Ships Project. Today I sent in a hat and four pairs of slippers. Next month I will send 25 cool ties. I got interested in this by reading about it on the Knit U site. The things we make we send to Florida during the first week of each month. She and her helpers send them to our servicemen overseas. I have been working for this project for about six months.

In the fall of the year I knit teddy bear outfits for the Cubs for Kids project which is done my ladies in New York. I knit sweaters, hats, scarves for teddy bears and send them to White Plains, Ny. I knit 6 or 8 outfits. The dressed teddies are given to homeless children at Christmas.

Since the early 80's I have knit for the Salvation Army. I knit hats sweaters, mittens, stockings for needy people in our area. Those are distributed at Christmas time.

The Afghans for Afghans is another project I support. I make sweaters, hats, mittens, and socks for them , too. Those are distributed by a lady in Florida, also.

During the 9/11 tragedy, I sent a box of knitted items to a homeless shelter in the Bowery section and I sent knitted hats to Ground Zero for the firemen to wear under their helmets.

I would like to think I have made a difference in people's lives.
