Survivor Support - Lifting Spirits with Hand Knits

A breast cancer survivor friend of mine started a support group to help patients as they go through the various stages of cancer and its treatment. I offered to knit a scarf for them and have used mostly fun fur scarves. I did several different colored scarves, but most were the pink associated with breast cancer survivors.

For another group my friend helped with, the Sisko Foundation, I created a "survivor's scarf." It is knitted with a slit so that the scarf can represent the breast cancer survivor symbol. Done correctly, the scarf lies flat over the shoulders and crosses in the front through the slit. It can be done in any color pink. I made 5 or 6 things for their silent auction fundraiser and hope to contribute again next year.

I think something as simple as a scarf with bright colors or fur just helps to lift people's spirits and sometimes that is all it takes to help that person have a good day. I believe that good days and hopeful thoughts are very important to a person's long term chance of survival. By report, the receivers of the scarves have enjoyed them.

I have a variety of my own health issues and the knitting keeps me busy and focused on other things. It totally helps my spirit. I probably could just knit for no reason, but by helping others by simply showing I care, it benefits both the giver and receiver.

I've used a variety of the Lion Brand yarns and made several of their free patterns, a baby blanket and hat. The patterns are easy to follow and when I have had a question, I always am able to get help.

I hope to get four or five friends and start a more organized effort to help the many groups in need in our community.

I don't have pictures but my new years resolution is to keep a log and a picture of all that I knit or crochet.
