Caring and Sharing

Junior Girl Scout Service Project -- Everyone Wins

I am the co leader of a Junior Girl Scout troop in Hamburg, NY
Our troop was in their last year of junior scouting and needed
to come up with a service project which was 15 hours in length that related to badges we earned during the year.

We chose to crochet baby blankets for the local children's hospital. Each scout who had just learned to crochet was given the task of crocheting 7 x 9" rectangles that were assembled into blankets. They were asked to complete 5 rectangles each.

Some made more.

Some less.

Some were perfect, some needed to be fixed.

All in all everyone learned something about crocheting. They
learned something about patience. They learned about themselves.

They learned about teamwork when they assembled the blankets.
There were a lot of laughs and a few tense moments as time
ticked away.

WE completed 8 blankets in all and some new babies will have
some bright blankets to greet the world with.

We shared our story at the award ceremony in which each
scout received their bronze award.

We would suggest that the yarns be lively for those new to crochet. Our 11 and 12 year olds liked to be able to complete the smaller pieces and were pretty proud of themselves when they saw the results of their efforts.
