Covering Every Bald-headed Chemo Patient in Town...

Last summer at our campground, knitting classes were offered for beginners. The first 2 projects were a 5-foot long scarf & a roll brimmed hat on circular needles. I had a difficult time at first never having used circular needles before, but once I got the idea in my head, I was off & running.

By the end of the season I had accumulated so many hats that I had to find a practical use for them other than just gifts for family & friends. I suddenly had a vision of an aquaintance who suffered from breast cancer & had undergone much chemotherapy. She always wore a little knit hat similar to mine to cover her very bald head.

I decided to approach the Falck Cancer Center where my husband had been treated for cancer. Since then they have set up a display of my "Hats of Hope" & they disappear like hotcakes. I have been signed on as an official volunteer & my goal for November '04 is to have 50 hats ready.

I'm working alone & using primarily "Lion Brand Jiffy" & "Lion Brand Chunky USA". The first. year I was able to keep at least 35 heads warm. It takes about 5 hours to complete 1 hat & I still enjoy making them although I'd like to work in some other project like mittens & socks. I love the "Lion Brand" products & get most of my yarn by mail or at Michael's.

I never dreamed when I started that my little project would grow to what it is today. What I hope to do is cover every bald-headed chemo patients in Elmira.....
