VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP MAKE CAPS, LAP ROBES, SCARVES TO DONATE TO CANCER PATIENTS

SHE Creations (Stitching Heaven & Earth) is a non-profit, non-denominational organization made up of volunteers who knit and crochet caps, scarves (in the cooler months) and lap-robes for cancer patients. ALL handmade items are donated to Cancer Treatment Centers.

My name is Cassie Nelson and I live in central NH. I have always had a passion to want to do something to help cancer patients, and being a knitter myself, I decided to research what I could make to give to the patients.

After contacting Cancer Centers, I discovered the type of caps most requested by patients, the different yarns preferred, whether there was a demand for these caps and did the Centers have specific guidelines for these handmade items including scarves and lap robes.

SHE Creations’ volunteers are made up of individuals, knitting groups, church groups, woman’s groups etc. We currently have Regional Chapters in ME, NH, NYS, Mass, PA and CT with volunteers in 12 States.

Some of the yarns recommended to make caps etc for cancer patients include the Lions Fun Fur, the Lions Microspun, the Lion Cotton Ease and the Lion Pound of Love.

Our hand-made items are donated to Cancer Centers throughout the country; the Dana Farber Center, NH; the Huntsman Cancer Foundation, Utah; the ECHO Cancer Foundation, CT to name a few including other Centers we donate to in Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, New York, again, to name a few.

The Portland Herald in southern Maine did an article on a local Parish Group of ladies who are making caps and lap robes for SHE Creations to donate to their local Cancer Centers. Thanks to their article, they received many calls from people wanting to volunteer their time to help in the making of these items to donate.

SHE Creations future goal is to eventually become nationwide donating to Cancer Centers across the country; meeting the needs of their cancer patients.

SHE Creations is not just about donating caps etc---it’s about meeting the needs of the patients. Through the efforts of our Regional Coordinators and volunteers, who so graciously and selflessly volunteer their time and materials making these items, play a major part in making all this possible.

In closing, it was projected in 2009 that there would be 1.48 million cancer cases diagnosed that year, which did not include non-invasive or skin cancers. It has also been projected that number will increase by 6% per annum. New volunteers and Regional Coordinators are always welcome. Caps are worn and lap robes used all year round, every single year. Due to the high demand for these items we donate, we can never have enough people volunteering their time in helping us to be able to give to cancer patients.

If a patient can pick out a cap, put it on with a smile and feel good about themselves wearing it because someone cared enough to specially make it for them; then we are doing something right -- making a difference in someone’s life who is going through a very uncertain, scary and troubled time –letting them know they are thought of and cared about in their time of need.
