Reaching Out with Yarn, Needles and Prayer

Someone showed me a copy of the Knitting the Mystery during the summer and I was hooked.

I am a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. I was convinced that this would be a wonderful opportunity for us as a community to sponsor this ministry by purchasing the materials needed for those who wanted to get involved. I presented the idea to our Leadership and they thought it was a very meaningful ministry and agreed to pay for the needles and yarn that we used.

At a recent community gathering, I displayed the book, two completed shawls, yarn, needles and the directions. What made it more effective, I sat near the table in a rocking chair knitting on a shawl hoping to lure people in. I ended up with 24 signatures of interested weavers.

Presently we have 36 who are participating and we are hoping for an even greater numbers once the idea has taken hold. We have been given the names of nine people, seven of which have already received a shawl.

Our local group meets once a month. There are other pockets of weavers throughout our Province but have not as yet organized themselves into groups to meet on a regular basis.

For the most part we use Lion Brand Homespun yarn. The colors are beautiful, the texture so soft and the care very easy.

The recipients of the shawls are so overwhelmed by the prayers being said for them and the beauty of the shawl that we hear back from most of them.

This whole idea of reaching out to others in prayer does as much for the weaver as the recipient. It is with much joy that we make, bless and give the shawl as gift.

With each shawl, we give a card with a picture on the front of us sitting in the circle and another in the inside of us touching and blessing the shawl. I need to have someone else send them to you. At that point I'm not sure if it would be easy for you to put the story together with the picture since they are not together. I hope somehow you share the stories with everyone - it would be most impressive to see how they all fit together.

Thank you for asking about the ministry.
