Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

Prayer Shawls

About two years ago, as our sewing group was completing a project of cross-stitching almost three hundred Christmon ornaments for the Christmas tree in the sanctuary, the pastor came through and said, "What about prayer shawls for your next project?"

How I wish I had kept a count of the shawls that we have knitted and crocheted! We have several experienced knitters who have so willingly helped new knitters, and I have become the go-to crochet teacher. This group of ten to twelve women gathers each Thursday, potluck lunch in tow, to sew together for about four hours. This started with women from the De Kalb FUMC, but others from our small community have joined--two ladies drive from a neighboring town to join us.

Every month or so, the finished shawls, afghans and lap robes are placed along the alter railing and blessed in a Sunday morning service. Our pastor then delivers these to anyone in our church, as well as anyone in our community, who is ill, grieving or in need of a comforting sign that he/she is loved.

This past winter, our products expanded as a shelter made known a need for caps and scarves. many of our creations were knit and crocheted using some of the free hat and scarf patterns from the Lion Brand Blog. We were delighted to spot one of our caps in a photo when the newspaper did a story on the shelter.

The congregation has been so generous donating yarn for our use, and many of us buy whenever we find a sale--or a particularly pretty skein! Vanna's Choice is a favorite yarn that we use (I'm working on a cap now in the honey color,) and several of the knitters choose Homespun because of the wonderful colors and softness.

Our group comments often about how we are also blessed by these products through the fellowship we enjoy as we work together. The Thank You cards that come to the church let us know that we are doing a good thing!
