Prayer Shawl Ministry
Created By: Chaplain Cindy Sloan

I am Staff Chaplain at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia NC.

I started a Prayer Shawl Ministry back in Jan [2005]. I saw a need to comfort people and a need to create from my passion and compassion. We meet the 1st Monday in each month. We are still rather small in numbers but enjoying 'downtime. We are made up of Hospital Volunteers, hospital staff that includes nurses/ and office folks and community people.

We do not have a budget so we all buy yarn with our own money. We have had two wonderful articles in this local news. and from this received several small donations to buy yarn. We have been asked to sell one of our shawls, but we do not do this.

I got the idea from Knitting Into the Mystery, a ministry started by two women, once a pastor and the others a lay leader in her church. It was such an awesome idea and the need to hand someone something that has been prayed over.

We pass our shawls around the room so each person can do a couple stitchs and say a silent prayer, something that might help someone understand that we do care in their greving and lost.

The women and one man leave finished shawls with me to trust that I will find someone in need.

The other great thing came from Washington DC at the National Organ Donor headquarters, when they found out that we teamed up with Life Share of the Carolinas to donate shawls to familes of organ donor in recognition of National Organ Donor Month this past April. Their celebration began July 25-26 in Washington.

We donated a beautiful shawl. I don't remember the blue was used, but it was made by an expert at knitting and it was flawless.

The shawl was given as a gift to the mother of a donor child. We always wonder a little about our gifts and she wrote a little about what it meant to her! Click here to read all about it.

We here At Gaston Memorial are proud that we can help someone whose heart is breaking.

Thank you for giving me a venue with which to expres our team here. If you are interested in meeting with us, click here

Peace to you
