Prayer Shawl Ministry - One Yr. Anniversary in Goshen NY
Created By: W Wendy

Our Ministry started when church member Darlene B. read the Debbie Macomber book, Back to the Shop on Blossom Street. She asked if anyone would like to make prayer shawls. About 6 women joined. Others have joined in the past year, but there are about 6 who really produce the shawls.

In one year we gave out 184 gifts from our church. Approx. 126 went out for illness, infimary or surgey. but, we also give them for new baby, baptism, Friendship,Bereavment, Military Moms, someone like Mrs. Macomber who inspired us etc. When they leave the church they go into a gift bag with a folder saying it is a gift from out church and ministry. In the folder are several prayers including the beginning prayer, an article written about us in the local paper and an explaination of the colors used and what shawls are about.

We try to meet each Sunday, but if we don't we all crochet at home.

One lady is 85 and makes one or two every week.

Others churches near us are beginning shawl ministries. We are now going to make shawls for a local hospital. A doctor in our church would like to see that women who have a stillborn birth leave the hospital with a "hug" around their shoulders knowing that someone cares. This is what we are working on.

In this past year our shawls have gone to 20 different states and as far as Mexico and London England. Many of the ladies make up their own patterns so every shawl is different. There will never be two alike.... We accept yarn to our ministry and if a monetary gift is given it is used for more yarn to continue the ministry.

Thank you.

Wendy Paffenroth. Shawl Secretary.
