month we feature a charity that is reaching out to those in need by
using knitting and crochet. This month's charity is Soldiers' Angels,
an organization that provides blankets and more to soldiers and
Soldiers' Angels is a volunteer-led non-profit organization that was
founded by the mother of two American soldiers, Patti Patton-Bader in
2003. Since then, the organization has continued to grow to almost
200,000 volunteers in over 20 different teams and programs that support
the various branches of the U.S. military. The organization sends
everything from care packages to deployed men and women to emergency
aid to military families in need to care and comfort to soldiers and
veterans in the U.S. There are programs to make blankets for soldiers
and to even "adopt" a soldier for a more personal connection. The
organization's motto is "May No Soldier Go Unloved" and its initiatives
reflect this idea.
This winter season, Soldiers' Angels hopes to donate 25,000 lap robes
to veterans spending their holidays in VA hospitals or facilities away
from home as part of their "Blankets of Gratitude" project. Knitters,
crocheters, and loomers can help out by donating lap robes
approximately 36 by 48 inches in size, made with machine
washable/dryable yarns. For more information on this project and patterns, please click
