Each month we feature an organization that uses the skills of knitters and crocheters to help those in need. This month, we feature Tails of Hope Foundation, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization whose volunteers create scarves out of Fun Fur which are offered in return for donations, used to provide life-saving advanced veterinary care for
companion animals undergoing cancer treatments.
Sadly, cancer claims the lives of 47% of dogs and 32% of cats. However, with advances in veterinary medicine many beloved companion animals are now able to survive and thrive after being treated for cancer, and thus grant every pet owner’s wish for more quality time with their beloved animal.
The fun furry scarf project was started by Doris Ahrens a life-long knitter who will be celebrating her 82nd birthday this coming September. The directions on how to make these scarves can be found on the back of Lion Brand Fun Fur yarn.
Donations support Tails of Hope Foundation initiatives including their Sponsor-A-PetSM and Blanketed with LoveSM programs. The sponsor-a-PetSM program helps pet owners in need defray the cost of cancer treatments.

The Blanketed with LoveSM program helps comfort pets undergoing treatment for cancer or other major illnesses; or those needing hospice comfort. Customized compassionate care packages containing a new blanket, and other items such as pet toys and treats, are shipped to owners. These care packages not only comfort the animals, but also express Tails of Hope Foundation's appreciation to the pets' guardians for providing humane and loving care for their
companion animals.
Each package is accompanied by a note highlighting the name of the donor (with their permission). Blanketed with LoveSM compassionate care packages have been sent from coast to coast and north to south.

After a particularly hard day I arrived home to find the wonderful gift waiting for us. I say us, because after Snookie and I opened the box she played like she hadn’t in a long time. When she was done she dragged every toy into our bed and slept with them under her blanket. What a wonderful gift for me to see her so happy and contented. Thank you so much, a day later we are still smiling. Please be assured of our heartfelt appreciation for helping. Thank you for the
blanket. She is snuggled under it as I write.

You can donate knit and crocheted blankets of all sizes to be included in the Blanketed with LoveSM packages. A tight weave, no fringe design would be perfect for dogs and cats and their owners to snuggle up together. Generally, acrylic items are
better for animals, as they are less likely to retain scents and can be machine-washed and dried. All sizes are needed, since animals come in all shapes and sizes. Patterns available on LionBrand.com include the Pampered Paws Felted Pet Mat, the Royal Pet Afghan, and the Super Plush Pet Afghan.
