Our ministry started by someone receving a prayer...
Created By: M Marylee
Our ministry started by someone receving a prayer shawl from another parish. We were so overwhelmed by the peace and blessing of the shawl that we decided to start our own Prayer Shawl Ministry. We started in Oct 2006 with a group of 10 dedicated women and we have grown to almost 20 members. We have given over 230 shawls to adults and children. Our shawls have gone to Iraq, they cover the incubators of children in the intensive care unit of our local hospital. They have gone to teenagers with anorexia and depression. We have given them to the dying, those with cancer, multiple sclerosis and the list goes on and on. One of our most touching stories is of an older woman who was dying. Her daughter put the shawl around her shoulders and immediately there was a peace and a comfort and she wore that shawl until the moment she died.. She told her daughter that she loved the shawl so much she wanted to be buried in the shawl. So her daughter wrapped her mom in the shawl as she was laid in the casket. We shawl makers are so blessed by these touching stories. We meet the first saturday of every month, we pray, knit, crochet and laugh together and teach each other new patterns. We are truly blessed by this ministry in our parish. My advise to those wishing to start a Prayer Shawl Ministry -to steal a quote from the movie "Field of Dreams" "if you build it they will come", perfectly describes what will happen. So many women love to knit and crochet and it is something they can do to help someone else and people love the blessing of the shawls.
