From 5 to 125
Created By: Joyce Winston
The organization of United Methodist Women asked for each church to submit five prayer shawls to be given to someone in need of prayer. We decided to try for five. Twelve women met one Wednesday morning. Five had never knited or crocheted before. We learned and submitted our five shawls. BUT we enjoyed the fellowship so much that we decided to continue meeting. One of the shawls was given to a gentleman having heart trouble. Several times while in the hospital nurses tried to remove the shawl and even though he was semi-conscious, he hel on tight. His wife shared that it gave him comfort and brought him though the difficult time.
Since the initial 5 were sent to the Assembly in Anaheim, CA in March of 2006 we have shared 127 shawls with folks in need. That is approximately 5 per month or about 1 per week! What a blessing to those who knit/crochet and those who receive. Such a simple thing: knit and pray while you are waiting at the soccer field, crochet and pray while you are waiting at the DMV, knit and pray as a deliberate effort to talk to God. Time spent with God thinking of others. Then taking that blessing and
sharing it and a short visit with someone who needs the power of the Holy Spirit, who needs the warm of a blanket, who needs the unselfish love of a neighbor. We don't always know the person who gets the shawl we make but one thing we do know, every shawl that is shared is done so with love, the love for our neighbors who live down the street, across town across the country and around the world and most of all the love of Christ who lives in all of us.
