Melissa's Story
Created By: Marilyn Warnock
March 2, 2008
In October of 2006 I saw a paper announcing that a Women's Ministry was starting at our Church. It was a knit group and they were calling it K
F
C
and if you fill in the Letters it is K-nit, F-or,
C-hrist. I didn't know how to knit and being 58 years old,I was afraid I would not be able to learn as easy because I can crochet. My fears were soon put to rest. These ladies were great! They taught me to knit. There were 3 people attending besides myself. When I started a project, I didn't know if I would ever finish it. The task was not as easy as I thought. One day someone asked me if I had heard about a local newscaster and her illness. She was 27 years old, pregnant and was found to have a rare form of Cervical cancer while have a check-up at one of her Prenatal visits.
She went through tests and they sent her to another state to a Doctor that was gong to give her treatments. This Prayer Shawl that I had started was just about to get me. My frustration was building every day. One day I decided if it was the last thing I did, I would finish this shawl
and send it to Melissa. I finished it in February of 2007 and I took it to the TV station. They got it to her and she wrote the sweetest Thank You note. Melissa died in the Spring of 2007 2 months after giving birth to a healthy baby boy. I don't know where that Prayer Shawl is now but, it holds a special place in my Heart for it was Melissa who
gave me the strong desire to accomplish something I thought I would never be able to learn.
It is March 2008 and we have as many as 14 people knit with us on Wednesday nights. We have just given away our 100th Prayer Shawl.
Each week I probably spend as much as 15 hours knitting on something for our KFC. I have lost track of how many Shawls I have done. Now, we are knitting Bears to stuff and give to children in our church, who are sick. We also give them to some of our churchs elderly women in Nursing Homes who have Alzheimers and they latch on to them and love them.
If you want to feel a real Calm and purpose in your life, then start one of these in your church.
You will be amazed at how wonderful it makes you feel to know that you have helped people who are sick or going through a hard time. It is truly amazing at the Hope and Comfort that these items bring to others.
