Gramma's Yarn
Created By: Tami winkfield

It began when my sister's and I were young and our dear Gramma was alwasys knitting or crocheting something wonderful. afghan's, baby blankets and sweaters and those slippers we loved but our parents hated because we'd slip and slide down the hallway and almost break our necks. Those slippers kept our feet warm and we knew that Gramma put alot of work into them, so it all made them more special. At one time or another we all learned from my mother and gramma about knitting, but hose times when my little sister learned how to knit those dishcloths was very special, because she was having alot of back problems and eventually had to stop teaching day care for all those children she loved so much. Now my Gramma has passed away, but she still remains with us. I recieved a large box of all her yarns and things, i had great fun knitting scarfs and trying my skills once again with new patterns. several years later i find that i only have a few colors left and a bunch 8 or 10 of one cream color uarn. i start a shawl, the patern i choose is the knitted wave, because Gramma used this one alot in blankets and such. I worked on it for almost a year and after two of my children getting married I finally went back to finish it. The day came and I was so excited, all the time while knitting it I imagined Gramma and me and Mom doing the gardening and knitting and talking and just remembering all those wonderful things about Gramma and how it's feel to wear this about my shoulders. It is done, finished and i begin to wrap this 70-inch shawl around my shoulders and it didn't feel right, there is no comfort. So it is folded and sitting on the end of my dresser for a few more weeks. While pondering who this belongs to, one day I talk to my Mom and then she mentions my little sister and the sweetest feeling came and wrapped itself around me and so I told Mom about this shawl and she said to pray about it, but she felt sure it belongs to my little sister . It was wrapped and tucked into a box with a note similar to this story and sent to my sister. Which, when she got it, she wrote back to me a dear letter letting me know that she feels peace and strength knowing that it is Gramma'a yarn and one of her patterns and through the grace of our Heavenly Father and listening to the whisperings of His spirit she nows has a prayer shawl to give comfort with the meaning of how it came to be. Gramma Maat in our family was always giving to others, whether it was her yummy baked goodies or the things she made or her time with you. Family is the most important thing she'd say and everyone around you is a part of that family. Thank you for allowing me to share this part of my life with you. and thank you for this program to help others, this is what we all should do, to help others and then we'd never feel alone.
