Trinity's Prayer Shawls
Created By: Ruth Seganti

I read on the Internet that Janet Bristow & Victoria Galo in Hartford, Connecticut organized the Prayer Shawl Ministry in 1998. I also heard about the Prayer Shawls from my Aunt Marie (Pinder). I became very interested in organizing & starting my own Prayer Shawl Ministry at my church.
My First Prayer Shawl Ministry was on September 11, 2007. There were only 3 people in my Prayer Shawl Ministry room. I held the meetings twice a month once during the day and the other one at night at Trinity UP Church. There were 5 other ladies who would knit or crochet a Prayer Shawl at home. So 8 ladies working on the Prayer Shawls.
I went on the Internet & printed up pages about the Prayer Shawl Ministry & instructions for so many different Prayer Shawls to knit or crochet that I made a book. I made copies for the ladies who were making Prayer Shawls. I keep my book in my Prayer Shawl Ministry room at church for people to read and try different instructions to knit or crochet a Prayer Shawl. I put my tables in the Prayer Shawl Ministry room in the shape of a cross. I have instructions on how to knit or crochet Prayer Shawls, chart about the color
symbols, & my schedule for 2007-2008 for the Prayer Shawl Ministry. I purchased the Prayer Shawl Ministry book in Michael's Craft Store for our room.
I started my first Prayer Shawl in August, 2007 & as of February , 2008 I knitted or crocheted 14 Prayer Shawls. I am now working on a knit & crochet
Prayer Shawl.
Sunday, February 17, 2008 at Trinity United Presbyterian Church, 360 North Oak Avenue, Clifton Heights, PA 19018 was the blessing of the Prayer Shawls. Before Pastor Nicole Duran blessed the Prayer Shawls , I spoke about the 21 Prayer Shawls that were knitted or crocheted in 5 months. I told the congregation that people who have terminal illness, medical treatment, oncology centers, nursing homes, abuse shelters, hospitals are places we will deliver Trinity's Prayer Shawls. There were also lap blankets that ladies knitted or crocheted for new born babies or a person in a wheel chair.
The person making the Prayer Shawl prays for comfort, strength & blessing on the person who will wear the Prayer Shawl. The ladies say a prayer before they start to knit or crochet the shawl.
I made my Prayer Shawl card on the computer with a picture of a shawl & typed the following :
Example: Dear Florence,
This Prayer Shawl was knitted or crocheted especially for you with love & prayers. It is a gift from Trinity Prayer Shawl Group. The Prayer Shawl was blessed on a Sunday Service. The Prayer Shawl was made for you, Florence while praying for your health, peace , comfort & love. In Christ Service, Ruth Seganti
I told the congregation when speaking that I am writing about Trinity's Prayer Shawl Ministry per an e-mail that I received for a page in a book from Lion Brand Yarn.
I covered a hanger with white material & put safety pins on the material for the 8 ladies to make a tassel to hang for each Prayer Shawl they knitted or crocheted.
I told the people if they would like to make a donation that would help with the cost of knitting or crocheting Prayer Shawls there are envelopes in the pews with pictures of Prayer Shawls . I have the envelope typed Trinity's Prayer Shawls Ministry for your donation. We greatly appreciate all your donations to help us ladies with the expenses & keeping the Prayer Shawls Ministry in Trinity for years to come.
After the service there were Prayer Shawls delivered to 8 for Trinity's Home Bound, 1 for 90th Birthday ,& 2 per request. A total of 11 Prayer Shawls were delivered on Sunday, February 17, 2008.
I suggest for a person who would like to start a Prayer Shawl Ministry to speak one Sunday in their church. Also write an article to have printed in your Sunday Bulletin,& church paper & talk to people in your neighborhood about your Prayer Shawls. I showed my Prayer Shawl that I was knitting to people when I was starting the Ministry.
I knit or crochet everyday on a Prayer Shawl at night watching T.V. for a couple hours or even while talking on the telephone I can knit or crochet my shawl. I remember my Mother when I knit or crochet. Mom loved to crochet blankets, bed spreads, scarfs, pillows, baby blankets & took orders. Now I am knitting or crocheting Prayer Shawls to give comfort & love to people everywhere.
