New Shawl Ministry
Created By: Sue Rolison

I just recently joined a new prayer shawl ministry group at my parish, St Anthony on the Lake in Pewaukee Wisconsin. Before this, I had knitted many prayer shawls on my own using the book "Knitting Into the Mystery". This was the first shawl I knitted as part of this new group. Unlike the earlier shawls that I made for family and friends, I didn't know who was going to receive this one. I just prayed that God would bless and comfort whoever might wear it. I made a triangular shawl with a worsted weight yarn in red (I had heard that Susan B. Anthony wore a signature red shawl) and fringed it with red Lion Brand Fancy Fur.

When I was nearly finished, I was told that a woman I knew was having back surgery and would be the recipient. I was excited as I felt the shawl matched her personality and charm and hopefully would comfort her. I wasn't able to present it to her, but some of my friends had visited her in the hospital and brought it with them. She was very touched and thanked me through them. Later I heard her say that the shawl held so many of her tears as she went through the operation and physical therapy.

I had the opportunity to visit her a few weeks ago. She thanked me again and said that she felt the shawl was such a blessing to her. She went on to tell me that as she recuperates, her faithful dog lies next to her. Unfortunately, the dog is old and suffering from what is feared to be a brain tumor. She has been quite worried about her and has been looking for ways to help her. She wanted to tell me that she was so comforted by the shawl, that she thought her dog could be helped also. So, she put the shawl on her, but it made her too warm. So then she just put the fringe from the shawl on her hoping that it would bring comfort to her too.

I have felt quite blessed by the gratitude of those who have received my shawls. This was a special surprise though to know that the shawl might be serving a new ministry.
