Angel for your Pocket
Created By: Tammy Maynard
Four years ago my grandfather was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma “T” Cell, about the same time that my mother (his Daughter) passed away… He was 80 at the time, and we were and still are very close. He went through the typical chemo and radiation but unfortunately it didn’t make it go away. So his Dr earlier this year told him that they could slow the cancer down, but not obliterate it by doing 3 days of Chemo every three weeks…. When I heard that I thought to myself “if I was going through this again, and again I would be so scared, I would also feel hopeless and alone” I am so proud of him for being so strong to be able to go through this. He and my grandmother were my strength and my angels during my Mother’s illness and eventual passing. I wish I could be his strength and go with him to every treatment, but because of my own family obligations I cannot always be there. Well I have a thing for angels… I have angels hanging all over my house; they are a comfort to me, ever since I was little, I’ve always had an angel in my room. Last summer, I was on the lion Brand site and read about the prayer shawls, and thought that they are a wonderful idea but… My grandfather, being who he is would not wear a shawl, (Can you imagine a former Drill Sergeant wearing a shawl… Not going to happen… even if his granddaughter made it ), at that time I was doing two little angels for a friend of mine whose daughter just had twins… the Idea came to me… If the person I was praying for wouldn’t be comforted by a shawl well what about prayer angels…. Angels for your pocket. I was going to dinner at my grandparents that day so I quickly crocheted a cloths peg angel for his pocket…. Well it’s been through the wash several times but… he carries it in his pocket everywhere he goes… it touched me so much that I decided to crochet more, sell them, and donate the profits to the Canadian Cancer Society. Well I’ve only just begun… but the idea has gained momentum… A friend who runs a craft table is even willing to donate a corner of her table to help me sell them. Every little angel I crochet with love and a prayer with every stitch I make, I am hoping will comfort someone in need… as they are a comfort to me. Thank you for giving me the time and the space to tell my story, which I am hoping will go on for quite a while.
