9/11 American Flag
Created By: Katie Morrissey
I was taught to crochet by a night nursery nurse when I was an 18 year-old nurses' aide in the newborn nursery. She was thought to be a crab, but she had such patience with me, and I'm forever grateful to her.
When 9/11 happened, I was frustrated to do SOMETHING for my country. I couldn't leave my house, because, although I was on vacation, I was automatically placed on call as an Emergency Nurse for my local NY hospital, so I couldn't even give blood! I decided to start an American flag afghan. I crocheted furiously, with my heart full of patriotism and sorrow, and hope for survivors. I never got called for the ER, and I finished the whole bedsized afghan in just 3 days! I developed a tendonitis, needless to say, which I considered my 9/11 injury. I raffled the afghan off at work and donated the money to the families of the 9/11 victims fund. Crochet kept me sane and focused at the most stressful time my generation has seen.
