Keeping Sane
Created By: Charlene Hewitt
In 1997, my husband and I spent 5 months at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX where my husband was receiving treatment in hopes to save his life. The constant round of treatment, doctor's appointments and critical health problems was a constant drain on me as the caregiver in trying to keep our lives in some kind of order. My family was 12 hours away in Kansas so we were very lonely fighting this disease. I began to crochet baby blankets to keep myself on track and to keep my mind off of the possibilities that could happen if treatment did not work. I met a couple in the hospital who were expecting their first grandchild in the Fall of '97 but it was obvious that the man with cancer would not make it till then. I crocheted a yellow baby blanket for him to give to his pregnant daughter and the joy in his eyes was all the reward that I needed to give me the strength to continue to have hope for my husband. Crocheting has pulled me through many a crisis. Thank you for listening. Charlene
